GAZZETEA MEETS MAI

We first met Mai Maxwell in Zanzibar, wearing bright green palazzo pants paired with a casual black T-shirt and flip flops. Her natural curls were popping- no makeup, just her natural sun kissed complexion.  At first glance she’s the kind of woman you know you want to  invite to brunch. She was super friendly and open and just as charismatic as she is on her social media platforms.

As the gazzetea team was preparing to sit down with Mai for our “Enroute Egypt ” episode, we had a brief conversation where Mai shared what she’d been up to in Zanzibar, mainly exploring the cuisine,  and content creating with locals.

She also told us that her and her husband, Max, were on a mission to travel the continent of Africa.

Off camera but on the record, Mai also discussed her recent move to Dubai and how it was important to her and Max to find the right fit for their new home having moved houses twice within a few months of relocating to Dubai. “It’s important for it to feel like a real home because we are going to be living in that space and it needs to suit who we are… because eventually Max and I are planning to start a family… ” said Mai.

Mai is a tiktok and instagram sensation  known for comedy. Mai’s first TikTok was a post from September 2019 about growing up with Egyptian parents, which gained over 5,000 views and the rest is history. She often posts TikToks featuring her Egyptian mother, Mama Wafaa, who recently authored a book entitled “Cooking With Mama Wafaa”.

Throughout our episode Mai shares her response to recent critics deemed the “haram police” who criticized her attire at an event because they felt her clothes not fitting  for a muslim woman, she also delves deeper into what it’s like living a very public life and shares advice for singles. (FYI we thought her dress was a vibe.)

The second episode of our En route Egypt is not one to miss so watch out for it on our youtube page HERE
