Resurrecting Memories: Why Nostalgia is important

We are all looking forward to the long weekend and while the Easter season is a time to  gather with family and friends to celebrate, the extended break also offers us  a moment to reflect. The festive season brings with it  a sense of comfort that reminds us of our roots and values.

Recent research suggests that nostalgia can have mental health benefits, however it’s important to know the difference between healthy nostalgia- fondly remembering happy moments and unhealthy nostalgia- longing to be back in the past. Throughout the rest of this article I will be referring to healthy nostalgia.

As we grow older our lives change and it’s easy to  forget the  experiences that shape parts of who we are, but through nostalgia we can anchor ourselves in our personal history establishing a deeper sense of our authentic selves.

Here are 3 ways you can tap into your  inner power of nostalgia this holiday:

  1. Revisit old family traditions.

Whether it’s the smell of freshly cooked pilau or nyama choma (barbecue), relish the traditions that feed your soul.

  1. Listen to “muziki za enzi zile” aka music from back in the day.

Take some time to listen to the songs that were popular during your childhood or that remind you of happy times. Music not only transports us back in time it can unlock forgotten memories that provide a sense of instant comfort and familiarity.

  1.  Look through old family photos.

Bust out that old photo album and reminisce on old memories. Take note of how far you have come, all you have achieved and overcome.  Sharing memories and stories from the past can be a great way to bond with friends and family members. Taking the time to do this just might remind you of how fleeting time can be, therefore make the most of it. Allow yourself to travel down memory lane and appreciate the milestones  you’ve reached along the way.

By resurrecting your memories you can gain a greater sense of perspective, gratitude, and optimism for the future. So, don’t be afraid to indulge in a bit of healthy nostalgia this holiday to boost your overall sense of appreciation.
