Typically, our fathers don’t just give us half of our genetic makeup; they also pass down their last name.
However, in Tanzania and many parts of Africa, it’s a whole different ball game when the firstborn arrives. There’s an equal exchange of names between the child and father. From that moment on, he became “Baba (Insert name of first born)” to the entire community, hardly ever referred to by his first name ever again. This transition isn’t just about a simple change in title, it embodies the profound role fathers play in shaping the lives of their children.
Throughout Africa and across the diaspora, fathers are revered and respected beyond mere words. Take, for example, the tradition of serving fathers first at the dinner table and giving them the best cuts of meat. It’s a symbolic gesture that speaks volumes about their selflessness and nurturing nature. Just as they provide for their families, fathers are nourished by the warmth and gratitude that radiate from their loved ones.
About 35 days ago, we published an article celebrating Mother’s Day—a time of joy, but also acknowledging the pain that can come with it. We provided tips on how to support those who find the holiday difficult. Today, it’s Father’s Day, and we want to extend the same sentiment, recognising both the joy and pain associated with this occasion. If Father’s Day brings discomfort or pain to you, please know that we’re sending you massive virtual hugs!
We understand that life isn’t always fair, but it’s still worth celebrating and sharing. If you know someone who might be struggling to keep a smile on their face because of Father’s Day, reach out. A simple text like, “Hey, it’s Father’s Day today, and I know this may be a painful time for you… I just wanted to let you know that I’m thinking of you,” can go a long way in brightening their day.
And if Father’s Day gasses you up for all the right reasons, we want you to know that we’re genuinely happy for you ! If this article resonated with you, share your Father’s Day story with us using the hashtag #gazzetea on social media. We’d love to hear your experiences, whether they’re good or bad.
With that said, we want to wish you a heartfelt HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
Did you look forward to serving your dad the best cuts of meat or were you secretly envious? Do us a favour drop your father’s first name in the comments, as a way to honour the new identity he took on once he became a father. We’re eager to hear from you!
